When hiking through the blistering desert, the fridgid Sierras or the sopping Pacific Northwest, gear is such an important part of thru hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. I need gear that is dependable, useful and lightweight. Prior to my decision to hike the Pacific Crest Trail, I had plenty of outdoor gear. Years and years of camping, fishing, hiking and traveling just culminates into collecting lots of gear. I had a tent (4.6lbs), backpack (4.2lbs), sleeping bag (3.7lbs) , pocket knife (11oz), flashlight (14oz). You name it I had it. What I didn't realize is all that gear was "heavy" in the backpacking world. Once I started to dive into what I needed to give me the best chance to thru hike this trail, I realized I was going to need to buy all new gear. I tried my hardest to balance comfort, with necessity. Every ounce I put in my backpack will be felt by my feet, ankles, knees, hips, shoulders and back. Knowing this I made a concertitve effort to just take what I NEED. This means everything I put in my pack has a specific use and I am very confident that I will use it. After a couple years of slowly researching and collecting gear I have finally come up with the gear that I will be taking out with me. Here it is:
